Messiah Women of the ELCA is an organization within the church that supports the ministry of Messiah. We reach out to all women of the congregation who are members of Women of the ELCA by the fact that they are members of Messiah. All women of the congregation are welcome to attend any and all of the Women of the ELCA meetings.
Women of the ELCA is the women’s organization of the 5.1 million-member Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This network of nearly 500,000 participants in 64 geographical areas (called synods) in the United States and the Caribbean exists for mutual support and bold action on participants’ faith in Jesus Christ.
The organization builds on the strong history of women’s missionary movements, Bible study, and service in which our foremothers engaged. Some of us recall stories from our grandmothers of how they saved “egg money” (from the sale of eggs) so they would have money to donate for support of missionaries in other countries. You may have heard how our foremothers trudged through snow for hours to get to Bible study at another woman’s house, hung their stockings on the line to dry while they studied, and then trudged home again the same day. Or you may have heard about schools and orphanages built in various parts of the world with women’s Thankofferings.
Every year the members of Messiah Women of the ELCA make Christmas stockings for Wernersville Hospital and with the help of the Confirmation and High School Sunday school classes and the generosity of the congregation, we assemble school kits for Lutheran World Relief that are distributed to children in the US and around the world.
We also sponsor a Spang Crest birthday party with the entertainment provided by several youth members of our congregation. Our offerings are sent to support Women of the ELCA Thankoffering, the Independent Church in India, Church Women United Leprosy Fund, The Tanzania Women’s Credit Union and the Tanzania Pastor’s Salary Fund. Messiah Women of the ELCA also purchases gifts for the shut-ins of the congregation as a way of brightening their holiday season.
Messiah Women of the ELCA were given a certificate from the Lutheran World Relief program for participation in Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza. Proceeds from each brick go to Lutheran World Relief's Project Comfort to ship quilts and other material resources to our neighbors around the world.
We have two groups called circles that meet monthly for Bible study and fellowship at the church: the Nancy Stevenson Circle, which meets the first Thursday of the month at 2:00, and the Deborah Circle, which meets the third Sunday of each month at 3:30. We also meet twice a year for our Combined Meetings in April and November. Please come and join us to become part of this ministry. View our 2006 report.
